17 Mar 2026: Borders players off to Glasgow; BICC and Selkirk results

We have two BICC results to report from the Minor section, both of them against the gradings: Nick Dunne has beaten John Moore, and Sam Cornwell has beaten Alan Armstrong. In the Selkirk Championship, Mark Gardiner beat Steve Carter, and in a tremendous game which went the full distance, Nick Dunne beat Sam Cornwell. A tense and great game, which you really should play through.

Glasgow Congress

27-29 March sees the 54th Glasgow Chess Congress, and the Borders will be well represented this year. Five players have entered so far - all from Selkirk - and, as Kevin Poulton writes, these are: Selkirk top hope Nick Dunne closely followed by Sam Cornwell; Kevin Poulton entering his only second congress after Newcastle; and the other two are new to congresses: Tam Wylie and Alex Brown.

Best of luck to all those five. It will be a good weekend for them.  To enter, please use the link below.

10 Mar 2026: NHS 2½-1½ Selkirk B; BICC results

In a match played in the County Hotel, NHS defeated the Sekirk B team by 2½ points to 1½. NHS had a good start on Board 1 when Selkirk's Dave Bogle blundered a piece on move 13.  Board 2 saw an 18 move draw between NHS's Max Scott and Selkirk's Geoff Hope.   On Board 3, Sam Cornwell's persistent Kingside pressure led to Steve Litster losing material, which proved overwhelming in the end.  Finally, Logan Symons and Harry Cornwell played a wild and aggressive game, with Logan coming out on top and mating Harry.   We have all the games on the League Fixtures page...

In the BICC Championship section,  Gerry Johnstone and Mark Gardiner drew their 3rd round game, and in the Minor section Nick Dunne has beaten John Moore.
