28 May:  Selkirk A ½-3½ Gala;   NHS 1½-2½ Kelso

27 May 2025: Fine win for gala

Gala played an away match against Selkirk A on Tuesday night, with Gordon Christie, Rob Crosbie and Craig Rodgie all scoring wins to record a convincing victory by 3½-½.  The most unusual game of the night was on board 1, where Martin Wallace was playing Dave Bogle:

Martin took a leaf out of Magnus Carlsen's book by playing the very rare opening 1. c3 (it's called the Saragossa, apparently) and following it up with 2. Qa4+ and 3. f3.  All very weird.  Despite this choice - eccentric yes, but psychologically powerful nonetheless - Martin achieved a very reasonable position, and after some comings and goings an endgame was reached where Dave's extra pawn would not be enough for a win, and a draw was agreed.
